Tea Drunkeness

Tea drunkenness is a hotly debated topic among tea connoisseurs. Some of this debate stems from the fact that many people use the term “tea drunk” to mean different things. For some it means a hangover feeling from drinking too much tea, while for others (such as myself) it refers to the high feeling you get when consuming a lot of high-quality tea.

Even among people who agree about what the term means there is a lot of debate about what causes said feelings. Some people attribute it to the theanine that is found in tea. Some people like to say that the effect is caused by more esoteric reasons.

L-theanine is an amino acid which is calming and can balance the effects of caffeine that is also found in tea. This is why with the right amount of tea you can feel more focused and energized without getting jittery. Going past that point is where you start to feel tea drunk.

I’ve personally experienced this feeling from drinking large amounts of tea. Since I am a big guy I had to get creative and add my tea leaves to some smoothies in addition to drinking the way I normally do. Every day for 2 weeks I would drink 8 plus cups of tea, as wells as my smoothie. During this experiment, I was happy as a clam.

It allowed me to work harder because I was more focused, calm and generally feeling happier. That not only affected my work but my hobbies as well. One of my hobbies is studying Japanese and Chinese. I was able to study harder in that 2 weeks than the I had the previous months.

After two weeks my tolerance went up and it was harder to get tea drunk. I decided to dial it back down to my normal amount of tea(which is still a lot!). I chalked this experiment up to a success.

If you try this, please don’t drive. Know your limits.
